Text

by Hankō

Master Tani Bunji had lodged in the Kagetsuan for several days. / I was unable to go visit him, because my son caught smallpox. / It was not until his imminent return that we managed to meet. / I thereupon made this painting and poem to bid him farewell with respect. // Blurry silhouettes of the town encircle the ancient ford; / the chilly mist and pale moon are intimate to the feel. / Our meeting is worth cheering, / but not without regret; / it is not yet time for the plum trees to blossom.
